ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Overview of the New Zone — Engineering Perspective
South Coast Railway is the newly formed 18th zone of the Indian Railways with its Headquarters office at Visakhapatnam. It has been created duly carving out 3 Divisions of South Central Railway namely Vijayawada, Guntur, Guntakal and by adding the truncated part of existing WAT division of ECoR and that portion of KUR division of ECoR falling within geographical boundary of Andhra Pradesh, duly renaming as Visakhapatnam Division.
97.75% track of SCoR jurisdiction falls within the state of Andhra Pradesh. Remaining 2.25% of the Route Km is spread over adjacent states (Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu). It has 3532.407 Route Km and 6455.436 Track Kms on Group A, B and D routes. This zone has 1472 Km of 130 Kmph running track (i.e. 41.7% of total Route Km).
There are 385 Railway Stations including 02 numbers of NSG1 Stations (VSKP, BZA). SCoR Rail Network serves four Freight handling ports — Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Krishnapatnam and Kakinada.
There are 13,512 Bridges over SCoR network. Out of them 36 are Important Bridges which include the Godavari Bridges (Road-cum-Rail bridge, Bowstring Arch bridge) at Rajahmundry, & Krishna Bridge at Vijayawada along with 1101 Major Bridges and 12,351 Minor Bridges. The Godavari rail bridges in Rajahmundry are engineering marvels — they include the historic Havelock bridge (de-commissioned), the Godavari Arch Bridge (a bowstring arch rail bridge) and the Godavari Bridge, one of Asia’s longest continuous Road-cum-Rail Bridges, with a length of 2.79 Km on river Godavari. SCoR track network also consists of the 6.6 Km longest tunnel in the Krishnapatnam – Obulavaripalli line.
We have a Track Machine Workshop at Rayanapadu with in-house POH facility caters to the track machine needs of SCoR, SCR, ECoR, SWR and SR.
We, the Engineering branch of SCoRly maintain the safety of track, yard layouts and bridges. We also maintain station buildings, passenger amenities and other service buildings right from Ichapuram in East to Haddinagundu near Ballary in West, Motumarri in North to Bommasamudram in South. S Co Rly track follows entire Circar coast (Ichapuram to Kakinada) and Coromandel Coast (Kakinada to Gudur) connecting the ports to the hinterland., for a length of 896Km on the coast.
South Coast Railways’ Engineering Department owns the responsibility of continuous improvement, maintenance and safeguard of all permanent assets spread over its jurisdiction.
Scheduled inspections and systematic preventive maintenance of permanent way as well as of major/important bridges and strengthening of infrastructure are given high priority to reduce service interruptions and to improve the long-term performance of civil engineering assets. In addition to, the department manages railway land, water supply & drainage networks, station/passenger amenities, contributing towards smooth trains operations as well as better customer interaction experience
Construction wing of SCoR shoulders the responsibility of implementing new infrastructure development works with in the jurisdictions of SCoR such as planning, survey and construction of new lines, doubling and multi tracking of existing tracks, stations’ development, line capacity improvements, yard modernization projects etc., Engineering department is responsible for carrying out all these activities within the prescribed engineering specifications, duly ensuring the safety of running trains to achieve the targets.
Construction wing of S Co Rly has vowed to adopt advanced construction techniques and environment friendly maintenance practices thus supporting sustainable development of the railway system. Through continuous innovation, assessment and coordination with other branches, the Team Engineering helps in reliability, safety and future readiness of the South Coast Railway network.
