MECHANICAL DEPARTMENT

Role & Responsibility

The Mechanical Department of the South Coast Railway (SCoR), headquartered in Visakhapatnam, serves as the backbone of the zone’s operational reliability and safety. Entrusted with the comprehensive management of rolling stock, the department oversees the maintenance and upkeep of a diverse fleet encompassing a variety of passenger coaches and freight wagons over Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, and Guntakal divisions.

The department’s mission is built upon a trifecta of Safety, Reliability, and Innovation through specialized Carriage & Wagon depots, Workshops, and other motive power maintenance locations, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and rigorous maintenance protocols to guarantee a superior passenger experience and continued availability of high-capacity freight rakes.

Committed to a “Future-Ready” Indian Railways, Team Mechanical SCoR integrates green technologies and automated maintenance systems. Whether it is through the rapid-response capabilities of its Disaster Management fleet or the meticulous periodic overhauling of its assets, the department remains dedicated to upholding the highest standards of engineering and planning excellence in the service of the nation.

The Mechanical Department is also actively involved in Environment & Housekeeping Management activities through initiatives such as Clean Train Station, On Board Housekeeping Services and eco-friendly waste management practices to ensure improved cleanliness, hygiene, passenger comfort, and environmental sustainability.
