ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT

Roles & Responsibilities of the Electrical Department

The Electrical Department of South Coast Railway is committed to providing a reliable Traction Power Supply and keeping its associated assets in good fettle. Its core responsibilities include:

•Locomotive Maintenance: Maintaining Electric and Diesel Locomotives for reliable and safe train operations.

•Staff Management: Ensuring trained and adequate Running Staff for locomotives to achieve seamless train operations.

•Passenger Amenities: Maintaining assets of Electrical General Services for reliable and safe passenger amenities, including lighting, fans, air conditioning, lifts, escalators, and water pumping.

•Sustainability: Saving energy and generating green energy to protect the environment.

•Workforce Planning: Prioritizing manpower planning and training for the large workforce associated with the department’s four main vertices.

Major Functional Wings

The Electrical Department comprises four major functional wings, each headed by Heads of Departments (HODs) and Deputy HODs (Dy. HODs):

1

Electric & Diesel Loco Maintenance Wing

2

Traction Distribution Wing

3

Loco Operation Wing

4

Electrical General Services Wing

Note: Apart from these four main wings, there is an Electrical Energy Management Wing and an Electrical Construction Wing. Electrical Coaching services and MEMU services are managed under the Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer (PCME).

Key Achievements

■100% Electrification Goal

–The Electrical Department of South Coast Railway (SCoR) achieved 100% electrification of all Broad Gauge routes to reduce carbon emissions and dependency on fossil fuels.

■Energy Efficiency & Sustainability

–LED Transition: 100% LED lighting has been implemented across all stations and service buildings.

–Solar Initiatives: Substantial solar capacity has been installed, including solar PV plants and solar trees.

–HOG Technology: Widespread use of Head-On Generation (HOG) technology in coaches, making train operations more economical and eco-friendly.

■Infrastructure Modernization

–Passenger Amenities: Installation of energy-efficient lifts, escalators, tri-lingual digital signage, and USB charging points at major stations.

–HVLS Fans: Introduction of High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans at station platforms.

■Maintenance & Operation

–The department effectively maintains the electrical assets (OHE, substations) and electric locomotives (rolling stock) using modern, automated SCADA systems.

■Solar Initiatives & Green Energy

–Solar plants of a total installed capacity of 14,446.48 kWp are generating 14.2 Million Units of green energy per annum, creating a saving of Rs. 13.6 Cr/annum for the government exchequer.

–3,264.48 kWp capacity of solar plants have been installed in PPP (RESCO) mode, where companies install and maintain solar plants and sell the generated energy to the railway at a lower tariff.

–Electric locos with 3-phase technology are also generating 363.8 million units/annum of traction energy during regenerative braking, saving energy drawal by the TSS (Traction Substation).

■IR-NIYANTRAC

–A comprehensive IoT-based solution for smart railway platform management. The Net Zero Switch enables smart management of street lights, platform lights, and electrical assets on railway platforms.

–Major stations over SCoR electrical assets (platform lights, pumps, and street lights) are integrated with IR-NIYANTRAC.

Current Assignments

Kavach

An indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system in Indian Railways, designed to enhance safety by preventing train collisions through automatic braking if the Loco Pilot fails to act. This system is currently being provided in the maximum number of locomotives.

2×25 KV System

The 2×25 kV traction system is a high-efficiency AC electrification method that distributes power at 50 KV and feeds trains at 25 KV using intermediate autotransformers (ATs) every 10–20 km. This system reduces line losses, minimizes voltage drop, and increases distances between traction substations (TSS), making it ideal for high-speed or heavy-haul railways.

ABSS (Amrit Bharat Station Scheme)

63 Railway Stations under SCoR jurisdiction are being upgraded and modernized under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). Upgrades include the provision of lifts, escalators, facade lighting, LED lights, and high mast lighting.
