Core Mandate of the Finance & Accounts Department

The Finance and Accounts Department is responsible for managing railway finances — recording every transaction with accuracy, exercising independent internal check, tendering objective financial advice to the administration, and ensuring that the principles of financial propriety govern every aspect of the management of cash, stores, assets, and contracts. The department operates not merely as an accounting unit but as an active partner in financial governance, enabling the organisation to pursue its operational and development objectives on a sound fiscal foundation.

The seven core functions of the Accounts Department are as follows:

•Keeping Accounts

•Management Accounting

Providing structured financial data to support management decisions — covering inventory management, cost analysis, purchase decisions, and performance reporting.

•Financial Propriety

Ensuring that the principles of financial propriety are scrupulously followed in the management of all railway resources — cash, stores, assets, works, and contracts — and that no transaction is authorised without due sanction and financial regularity.
